Common Non-STI Genital Skin Conditions
Lichen Sclerosus
Chronic inflammatory condition causing thin, white, wrinkled patches on the vulva (women) or glans/foreskin (men). Causes itching, burning, and pain. Increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma with long-standing disease. Treated with ultra-potent topical steroids (clobetasol); regular follow-up is essential.
Lichen Simplex Chronicus
Thick, leathery plaques from chronic scratching of itchy genital skin. A cycle of itch-scratch-itch. Treated by breaking the cycle with topical steroids and anti-itch agents.
Inverse (Flexural) Psoriasis
Smooth, shiny red plaques in the groin, inner thighs, and gluteal cleft — often misdiagnosed as fungal. Treated with low-potency topical steroids or calcineurin inhibitors.
Contact Dermatitis
From perfumed soaps, wipes, lubricants, condoms (latex), or topical medications. Patch testing identifies culprits.
Fordyce Spots
Benign, visible sebaceous glands appearing as white/yellowish papules on labia or shaft of penis. No treatment needed; cosmetic concerns can be addressed.
Bartholin Gland Cysts / Vulvar Cysts
Benign cysts that may require drainage or excision if symptomatic.
